SWEAT STOPPER Installation Instructions

Read instructions thoroughly before starting installation

Materials supplied:

One 12" x 16" sheet of foam cut-outs
Four 12" x 16" sheets of foam
One tube adhesive

Tools needed:

Pencil
Measuring Tape
Straight edge
Utility knife
Abrasive cleanser such as Comet, Ajax or Bon Ami

Preparation:

Turn off water supply to toilet
Flush toilet and allow water to leave tank
For convenience, remove ball float and float rod
Clean the interior surface (bottom and walls) of the toilet tank using a good quality abrasive cleaner. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely.

NOTE: To use the toilet during installation of the tank liner, simply pour a bucket of water into the toilet bowl. This will have the same effect as flushing the toilet.

Part I - Lining the Tank Bottom

Position foam sheet with cut outs so it appears as in Fig. 1

At top and bottom of foam sheet, measure and mark 4" in front of left side. Using a straight edge, cut along line. Cut this piece in half again lengthwise. You now have two separate pieces, A and B, 2" wide x 12" long.

With remaining part of cut-out foam sheet, measure 6" up from bottom and mark right and left sides. Using a straight edge, cut foam along horizontal line. You now have two more pieces C and D, each measuring 12" wide x 16" high.

Trim short edges of pieces A and B as needed to fit around water control valve opening as in Fig.2.

Trim long edges of piece C and D as needed to fit around flush valve opening and along long sides of tank as in Fig. 2.

Use excess foam to fill any uncovered areas of tank bottom.

Remove all the foam pieces from the bottom of the tank. Apply a 1/16" thick coating of adhesive in 1/2" wide band around the bottom surface of each foam piece. Then apply spots of adhesive evenly over the foam. See Fig. 3.

Press each piece firmly into place so that each is in full contact with the toilet tank bottom. Each foam piece should butt up to adjacent foam pieces and to the toilet tank walls.

Part II - Lining the Tank Walls

Using the four remaining foam sheets, cut pieces so that when placed along tank walls they reach from the foam on the toilet tank bottom to one inch above the water line.

When all pieces for lining the tank wall have been cut and fit, remove them for gluing.

To glue the pieces of foam to the toilet tank wall, follow directions in Part I, steps 6 and 7 above. Use any remaining adhesive to seal gaps between pieces of foam.

With tank top removed, allow the adhesive to dry over night, or at least 8 hours.

Reinstall the float rod and ball float, turn on water supply, and flush the toilet to check it's operation.

Note: When lining the corners, the foam is flexible enough to bend 90° or more.*
However, if the foam begins to break, cut a series of narrow strips to fill in the around the corners.

*NOTE:
We at the PlumbingSupply Group have found that for best results it is better to cut the Styrofoam with a very sharp knife or other blade into the sizes necessary to line all sides of the tank. Please do not attempt to bend the sheets of Styrofoam to fit around the corners of the tank as it is likely to break.

Cutting the sheets to fit each side will give a much better result. Please do contact us prior to installing if this is unclear.

CAUTION: Do not use toilet bowl cleaners that are placed inside the toilet tank;
they may contain chemicals that will destroy the foam lining or its adhesive.

"How come on a summer day more than a winter day, there is water on the bottom of the toilet tank and on the floor under it? How can this be prevented?"
The water on the tank is actually condensation. The high humidity on a hot day and the cold water that fills up the toilet tank causes the tank to "sweat". The solution for this problem is to isolate the cold water in the tank by either insulating the tank with our styrofoam insulation kit, or replace the tank with a lined tank (some manufacturers with some toilet models sell, but these are very costly and don't prevent condensation any more than our kits).

how hard? "How hard is it to install this kit?"
Very easy. You need to totally dry out the tank but other than that, it is very easy to install.

will it fit? "My toilet is rather small. Will this kit fit?"
yes We haven't seen a toilet that this kit won't fit into (but we have had one complaint that the insulation was "too bulky" for their low flush toilet).

"Can I remove the lining later?"
Yes, it can be removed later but it could take a little elbow grease to scrap it off of the tank walls.

"Besides the above, what else can be done to help prevent or slow down condensation on toilets?"
One can install a tempering valve with a hot and cold water source. The trick is to add water to your tank at close to the temperature of the room.
Having air conditioning helps a lot since it tends to dry out the air.
Run warm water to a toilet. We do not recommend this. It is a waste of resources as well as there will be a potential to crack the porcelain. The temperature required has to be higher than the dew point inside the house. The more humid it is, the higher the temperature that dew or condensation will form.
Put one fuzzy tank cover on to act as an insulator.
Install a new toilet tank which already has a foam liner.
Install a new 1.6 gpf toilet. These are less likely to sweat as they only use a small part of the water in the tank and usually warm up before the next flush.
Install a dehumidifier in the house.

"How long will the liner last (will it hold up)?"
Polystyrene is a plastic that will last a long time if you do not expose it to sunlight and/or expose it to a high concentration of chlorine. If you do not install an automatic toilet bowl cleaner into your tank (most have chlorine in them) then generally this liner will last a very long time.
